Stocks on Wall Street Slip

Stocks on Wall Street Slip
A currency trader watches monitors near the screens showing the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI), top left, and the foreign exchange rate between U.S. dollar and South Korean won, top center, at the foreign exchange dealing room of the KEB Hana Bank headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, Monday, April 10, 2023. Shares were mostly higher in Asia on Monday after a report Friday showed resilience in the U.S. jobs market.
Wall Street is slipping Monday in the first trading for stocks after a report raised speculation the Federal Reserve may tap the brakes a little harder on the economy.
The S&P 500 was 0.6% lower in early trading. It did not trade on Friday, when the U.S. government said that job growth across the economy slowed a touch more than expected last month but remains resilient.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 53 points, or 0.2%, at 33,432, as of 9:45 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 1.1% lower.
Stocks were catching up to the bond market, where yields rose Friday on expectations the jobs data would push the Fed to raise interest rates at its next meeting. The Fed has already hiked rates at a furious pace over the last year in hopes of driving down inflation.
Higher rates can undercut inflation, but only by slowing the entire economy in one fell swoop. That raises the risk of a recession in the future and drags down prices for stocks, bonds and other investments.

Scotland wins men’s curling worlds; U.S. misses playoffs

Scotland wins men’s curling worlds; U.S. misses playoffs
Scotland, the home of curling, won its first men’s world title since 2009, while American John Shuster‘s team finished eighth, his worst result in seven world championships as a skip.
Scotland’s team skipped by Bruce Mouat, which won 2022 Olympic silver for Great Britain, beat a Canadian team skipped by 2006 Olympic champion Brad Gushue 9-3 in Sunday’s final in Ottawa.
“The year after the Olympics, where we were gutted with the result, but knew we had created something special when we were there, we knew that if we brought something similar we could definitely win a world championship, and that’s exactly what we did tonight,” Mouat said, according to British Curling.
Scotland ended its longest men’s world title drought since a 24-year gap from 1967 to 1991. Canada, the most successful curling nation in history, last won a men’s world title in 2017 and is in the midst of its longest men’s world title drought since the 1970s.

NASCAR tweaks appeals process amid continuing debate over rules violations

NASCAR tweaks appeals process amid continuing debate over rules violations
A couple of days after losing an appeal on penalties for wrecking Ross Chastain, Denny Hamlin remained incredulous and befuddled.
“I still don’t understand the ruling, considering all the examples and all the precedent, and even the real data that I brought to the table,” said Hamlin, who thought the telemetry data from his car showed he didn’t violate NASCAR rules.
“It still doesn’t make sense, which is the disappointing part, especially NASCAR’s stance on it. Refuting real data was just a tough pill to swallow.”
Hamlin wasn’t the only one who seemed a little confused on a decision last week, except this time the roles were reversed with NASCAR officials as the ones who left disappointed.
